Legal Courier
Legal courier services are specialized delivery services that pick up and hand-deliver legal documents, such as court filings, contracts, case files and evidence, quickly, securely and with proof of delivery. Unlike standard shipping, a legal courier moves documents directly from sender to recipient, often the same day, with a documented chain of custody.
For law firms, a missed filing deadline or a misplaced contract is not just an inconvenience. It can mean a lost motion, an unhappy client, or a malpractice risk. That is why attorneys, paralegals and legal departments rely on a dedicated legal courier instead of standard mail or a general delivery app.
This guide explains what legal couriers deliver, how fast they can move urgent documents, what to look for when choosing one, and how EEC Logistics’ legal courier service supports law firms locally and nationwide.
What Does a Legal Courier Deliver?
A legal courier handles any time-sensitive or confidential document a law practice needs moved between offices, courts, clients and other parties. Common deliveries include:
- Court filings and documents for the clerk’s office
- Contracts, closing documents and client agreements that need original signatures
- Case files and discovery materials moving between co-counsel or opposing counsel
- Affidavits, depositions and transcripts
- Evidence and exhibits that need a documented chain of custody
- Documents for apostille or authentication (see our apostille courier service)
- Payroll, HR and corporate legal documents for in-house legal teams
For non-legal paperwork, such as financial records and business contracts, see our document delivery service.
Legal Courier vs. Process Server vs. Standard Shipping
These three are often confused. The difference matters when you choose a provider.
| Legal courier | Process server | Standard shipping | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Delivers documents quickly and securely | Formally serves legal papers on a party | Moves packages on a fixed network schedule |
| Speed | Same-day, rush or scheduled | Depends on locating the person served | Usually next day or later |
| Handling | One courier, direct, no sorting hubs | Personal service with an affidavit of service | Passes through sorting facilities |
| Proof | Tracking and proof of delivery | Sworn proof of service | Tracking scan |
| Best for | Filings, contracts, case files, evidence | Summons, complaints and subpoenas that must be legally served | Non-urgent, non-sensitive items |
Service of process follows strict rules, such as Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4 in federal cases and similar state rules. If you need a document formally served on someone, use a licensed process server. If you need it delivered fast and securely, use a legal courier.
Can a Legal Courier Deliver Urgent Documents?
Yes. Urgent delivery is the main reason law firms use a legal courier. A courier picks up the document and drives it straight to the destination, so it does not wait for a carrier’s next sorting cycle.
Typical delivery options:
- Rush delivery: a dedicated driver dispatched right away for filings close to a cut-off time
- Same-day delivery: pickup and delivery within the same business day
- Scheduled and routed delivery: recurring runs between your office, the courthouse and client sites
- After-hours and weekend requests: for deadlines that do not wait for Monday
Court Filing Deliveries
Many courts now accept electronic filing, such as the federal courts’ CM/ECF electronic filing system. Paper still matters, though: original documents, exhibits, filings in courts or case types that require paper, and courtesy copies some judges request all need physical delivery.
A court filing courier delivers these directly to the clerk’s office before the cut-off time. When you book, give the courier the court name, the filing window and any instructions from the clerk.
Nationwide Delivery of Legal Documents
When documents must cross state lines, a nationwide legal courier can combine ground drivers with next-flight-out service to reach another city the same day or by the next morning. EEC Logistics provides nationwide coverage, so a firm in Atlanta can get original documents to a court or client in another state without relying on overnight mail.
Documents headed abroad may also need an apostille or authentication certificate from a state Secretary of State or the U.S. Department of State before they are accepted overseas.
How to Choose a Legal Courier Service: 8 Things to Check
Lawyers have a professional duty to take reasonable steps to protect client information; see Rule 1.6 of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The courier you hire is part of that chain, so check these points before you hand over client documents:
- Confidentiality procedures. Ask how documents are sealed, who handles them, and whether drivers are trained on confidential material.
- Chain of custody. The courier should record every handoff from pickup to delivery.
- Proof of delivery. Look for a recipient signature, a timestamp, and, ideally, a photo confirmation.
- Real-time tracking. You should be able to see where your documents are without calling dispatch.
- Speed options. Confirm they offer rush, same-day, and scheduled delivery, not just one tier.
- Court experience. A courier who knows local courthouses and clerk cut-off times saves you missed filings.
- Coverage area. Check local coverage and whether they can handle out-of-state or nationwide deliveries.
- Availability and communication. Ask about after-hours and weekend service, and how fast dispatch responds.

How Much Do Legal Courier Services Cost?
Pricing usually depends on distance, speed (rush costs more than scheduled), time of day, waiting time at the courthouse, and the number of stops. Recurring routes for a law firm are usually priced lower per delivery than one-off rush jobs. Request a quote with your typical routes for an exact price.
